The Egyptian government announces a gradual increase in petroleum prices by the end of 2025.. and 4 years for electricity

 

  • Counselor Mohamed Al-Hamasani, the spokesman for the Cabinet, said that the support bill has accumulated over the past years, noting that the national dialogue discussed many economic issues.

 

  • Al-Homsi added in televised statements that prices will be gradually raised until the end of 2025 for petroleum products only, except for diesel.

 

  • He continued, saying: “Moving electricity prices will take 4 years, gradually, and not in a large way that citizens cannot afford.”

 

  • Al-Homsi explained that even in the case of an increase, whether in petroleum products or electricity, low-income people will be taken into consideration by continuing to support diesel, and continuing to support the segments that affect low-income people in electricity.

 

  • He pointed out that there will not be a complete lifting of support, but there will be rationalization, and some prices will be moved to provide additional resources to be directed to low-income people.

 

  • Al-Homsi said that the subsidized bread system is as it is, with no change except for the price of a loaf of subsidized bread, which will become 20 piasters instead of 5 piasters, and that public opinion is being measured in this regard, explaining that there are understandings of citizens’ fears of changing the subsidy from commodity to cash..

 

  • Al-Homsi stressed that there is a degree of understanding in the reactions towards raising the price of subsidized bread, noting that the details and public opinion trends in this regard are being prepared.
